City of Ames Declares July 31 Mainstream Living Day

Mayor John Haila proclaimed July 31, 2025 as "Mainstream Living Day." In a proclamation read to the community during the regular city council meeting on July 22, Mainstream Living was celebrated for 50 years of service and being "instrumental in advancing the rights and opportunities of individuals with disabilities." Mayor Haila also recognized the organizations founding families, noting "the Hadwigers, Julius, Chevilles, and Samuelsons sought to create community living options for their children with intellectual disabilities, pioneering a movement toward inclusive, person-centered care." Both staff and members were present for the proclamation.
