Mainstream Emerging Leaders Program

In our ongoing efforts to enhance the leadership skills of our supervisory personnel, the Mainstream Emerging Leaders (MEL) Program was developed.  The purpose of MEL is to aid in the development of new leaders within Mainstream Living.  During the six month program, participants receive education to hone skills for effective communication and efficient navigation through the continual change that impacts the organization. With a maximum of 10 participants per year, each person completes a Total Person assessment to gain a better understanding of personal attributes and tendencies.  Classroom training topics generally include; creating a personal mission statement, understanding communication styles, emotional intelligence, the value of feedback, development guides, goal setting, situational leadership, and leading others through change.  There is a focus on interaction and hands-on application as each participant is paired with a mentor to work with during the program.  Participants also complete a project presentation focused on enhancing a work function.

To date, there have been 12 graduates, and the participants have reported their involvement to have been educational and rewarding. Eligible participants have included individuals who are currently in the roles of: Assistant Team Lead, Rehab Coordinator, Team Leader, RN Coordinator, Program Coordinator and Support Services.  We hope that future opportunities may be extended to Direct Support Employees who show potential and interest in leadership.

In 2016, Mainstream Living was excited to offer a pilot program for graduates of the 2015 MEL program.   This provided graduates with an opportunity to continue developing leadership skills, while building relationships and bringing positive change within the organization. The Emerging Leaders 2 Program (MEL 2) focused on how to work effectively as a team with interactive topics intended to be led by the group versus the facilitator.  This group was presented with the challenge to identify some innovative solutions related to retention and chose to focus on connecting employees and showing appreciation to our dedicated personnel.
