ISU & Mainstream Living - Work-Study Options

If you are currently a student at Iowa State University, receiving financial aid, then the Federal Work-Study program may be a good option.  Work-Study allows students to hold part-time jobs while in school without jeopardizing the amount of money they receive through their student aid applications (FAFSA).  Using this program may provide a good opportunity to earn extra income while still receiving the same financial aid benefits.

How does it work?
Many colleges and universities contract with non-profit organizations like Mainstream Living to help students earn money and gain experience in relevant fields.  Currently, Mainstream Living only partners with Iowa State University.  Though this partnership, learning institutions will often cover a portion of employee wages, and this income will not count against you when you fill out your FAFSA.

How does it benefit me?
If you are working and going to school, you most likely do not want all of that income to go towards your tuition.  You have expenses such as food, housing, entertainment, and basic needs.  Oftentimes though, having a job can limit the amount you are able to borrow to pay your tuition, and you will be stuck using the income from your part-time job paying for your classes.  Work-study ensures that this income does not count, so that you are able to borrow nearly as much as if you did not have a job.

How does it benefit Mainstream Living?
If you sign up for a work study program, the school may cover up to 75% of your wages.  You will be paid the same amount, but Mainstream can utilize that money to offset other costs that ultimately benefit the entire organization.

How do I sign up?
To sign up for work-study, you will need to contact the designated person in charge of this program at your college or university.  If you are interested, please speak with your supervisor or Human Resources for more information.
