Direct Support Professionals Week

September 10th through 16th is Direct Support Professional Recognition Week, where nationwide Direct Support Professionals (DSP) are acknowledged for their vital contributions to families and communities.  The more than 3.6 million DSPs across the county ensure people with disabilities and mental illness have the necessary supports that enable them to live, aspire towards goals, and enjoy life as independently as possible in their community.

“Our Direct Support Professionals are the backbone of our agency,” said Kris Eastman, Vice President of Waiver Services. “Their hard work and dedication make us who we are, they embody our culture in action. We have the best staff in the industry and, because of their work, I am proud to be here every single day.”

DSPs can work in a number of different settings with individuals with a wide range of abilities and interests.  There is often the opportunity for DSPs to share their own passions and talents with those  they support. “I see the kind of people that I would like to have help me if I had a disability, or if I had a family member in need,” says Bill Vaughn, President and CEO. “I am thankful every day that they choose to work at Mainstream Living, and I am in awe of their hard work and their dedication to our members.”

This year in celebration of DSP Recognition Week, Mainstream Living will be hosting an employee picnic.  The event will be held at Brookside Park in Ames on Saturday, September 16 from 11 am - 2 pm.  Lunch from Hickory Park, along with live music, face painting, and inflatables will be available for families to enjoy.  Please RSVP to the email sent out this week indicating the number in your family so that we can plan appropriately for food.  In addition to the picnic, all employees will receive a custom t-shirt with a surprise design - something with a little pop culture twist while keeping with the spirit of our culture.  Though DSP Recognition Week is a special time to celebrate, we are grateful every day for the difficult work that our staff performs in fulfilling our mission and vision.
